The sentencing of controversial cross-dresser, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment for abusing the naira isn’t sitting well with many Nigerians who have accused the country’s security agencies of applying double standards in its enforcement of the law.

Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, in her sentence, said the judgment against Bobrisky will serve as a deterrent to others who are fond of abusing and mutilating the naira.

Recall that a circular from the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, dated February 2024, vowed to arrest those who flagrantly abuse the naira notes at social functions across the country.

The apex bank said it will partner with security agencies to ensure that erring members of the public who abuse the new notes are arrested and duly punished in accordance with extant laws.

Hours after Bobrisky’s sentencing, a video showing the governor of Niger State, Umar Bago, throwing the naira in the air while in a moving vehicle in a town called Kagara raised concerns.

Renown human rights’ activist, Mahdi Shehu slammed the governor in a post where he tagged the EFCC following the virality of the video.

On Friday, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore also shared a video where he accused President Bola Tinubu of spraying and abusing the Nigeria currency, naira.

Sowore shared the video shortly after Bobrisky was sentenced to six months imprisonment without any option of fine for abusing the naira.

Although Tinubu wasn’t clearly captured in the video spraying the naira, Sowore called on the EFCC to prosecute the president some day just like Bobrisky Was prosecuted.

On his X handle, Sowore said: “This @officialABAT abusing the Naira at a party, spraying Wasiu Ayinde @k1theultimate, I hope @officialEFCC will prosecute him for this crime someday the same way @BobriskyIdris was prosecuted. #RevolutionNow.” CONTINUE READING
