A notorious commander of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), Alhaji Baana, has been captured alive by gallant army troops after several attempts to neutralize him.
According to StreetJournal, the ongoing special forces offensive mission across the northern part of Nigeria is yelding operational successes following Baana’s arrest.
Aside from the arrest, the troops also killed another commander of the terrorists group simply identified as Salafi.
Further reports say the troops promised to continue clearance operations nationwide, adding that the ongoing battle against terrorists across the nation is already yielding results.
Deji Adesogan, a journalist, confirmed Baana’s arrest, saying: “Credible reports indicate that Nigerian Troops have captured Notorious ISWAP Commander Alhaji Baana alive and eliminated another commander Salafi. Ongoing special forces offensive is yelding operational successes.”
The report has triggered massive reactions online.
Meanwhile, in another story, PremiumTimes publication revealed that ISWAP could be close to using delivery drones for attacks in the Lake Chad Basin owing to the fact that weaponising and adapting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a new trend in the group’s operational strategy, which could worsen conflicts in Northern Nigeria.
The publication cited a report by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) research which shows that ISWAP is already trialling delivery drones to carry improvised explosive devices.
“This includes assessing the weight that can be carried, how far they can go and how long they stay in the air. The threat goes beyond military targets and may impact humanitarian service delivery,” the publication added. CONTINUE READING
